After arriving in Bellflower Meadow, Joe gets a Camping Axe and Geology Pickaxe, but they aren’t powerful enough to cut the biggest trees or break the largest rocks.
To upgrade them, complete more Quests in Bellflower Meadow and its Mine to unlock the Smelter and Engineering.
Don’t worry about clearing all the clouds yet. You’ll be able to clear the remaining areas after upgrading your tools.

We recommend upgrading the Axe first. The 3rd Axe upgrade is required to cut the largest trees, such as Elm and Maple.
Camping Axe | Geology Pickaxe (Level 1)
You’ll find these basic tools when you first arrive in Bellflower Meadow, just to the left of the fenced area.
Wood Carving Axe | Roadworking Pickaxe (Level 2)
Buy the land in Bellflower Meadow, travel there, and then complete these Quests:
- Clear the Land
- Stone Path
- Cabin in the Woods
- Faraway Retreat
- The Big Clean Up
- A Good Wash and Repair
- Interior Decorator
- Fireplace Pop and Crackle
- Chimney Investigation
- To the North
- The Mine
- Metals and Minerals
- Metallurgy (in your Farm! not BfM)
Lumberjack Axe | Mining Pickaxe (Level 3)
After you upgrade Joe’s tools to Level 3, simply repeat what you did for After upgrading Joe’s tools to Level 3, simply repeat the same process you used for the Level 2 upgrade:
- Find more metals and minerals in the Mine.
- Craft a Super Steel Ingot in the Smelter.
- Go to Engineering to research and craft the Level 3 Axe/Pickaxe.
Important: Level 3 tools require an Oak Hardwood Log, not the Elm Hardwood Log used for Level 2 tools.
Machete
On the La Palma plot in Emerald Beach, Joe will find a Field Machete, which is useful for clearing vegetation while using less Energy than the Axe.
The Field Machete is the basic Level 0 machete. You can upgrade it to the Trail Machete (Level 1) and Bushmaster Machete (Level 2) in the Engineering Shack. See the Axe and Pickaxe section above for how to unlock these upgrades.
You must Research each upgrade before you can craft it. The first time you craft a new Machete, Joe will automatically equip it.
